How AI is Sucking Up the World's Water

1. AI & WATER: Their Connection

AI Models such as ChatGPT-4 demand LOADS of computational power, so researchers estimate that training one large model can consume over 700,000 liters of water. 

WHY DO THEY NEED WATER?

These facilities rely on cooling systems (using water) to prevent servers from overheating.  This is a process LARGELY hidden from the human eye. 

Major tech companies are building/operating data centers in some of the most water-scarce regions on EARTH. As AI and cloud computing explode, so does the water demand. 

2. The In-Depth research by Cornell - The Terrible Loss of Water

An article by Cornell published in phys.org was called, "AI data centers projected to strain US energy and water resources by 2030". C'mon! It's already 2025! The article was published today, on Nov 10, 2025.

As the everyday use of AI has exploded, so have the energy demands of the computing infrastructure that supports it. Because of the amount of AI, the energy demands would obviously be an abundance of water for cooling. 

Here is the data Cornell collected:

[BONUS - By 2030 - if the rate of AI continues in this growth, there will annually be 24-44 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which is equal to adding 5-10 million cars to U.S. roadways.]

It would also drain 731-1,125 million cubic meters of water per year{annually}, equal to the annual household water usage of 6-10 million Americans.

3. What is WATER STRESS?

Water stress is a synonym of water scarcity. [Scarcity is a small amount of something.]

According to bloomberg.com, two-thirds of new data centers built/in development since 2022 are IN places already with water stress. [water scarcity] While the facilities are popping up all over the country, 5 states ALONE account for 72% of the new centers in high-stress areas.

4. CONCLUSION

The next time you want to ask AI to explain a tough math concept, you want it to edit your essay, or generate an image of a flyer, remember, it sends a request to the data center and strains an increasingly scarce resource: WATER.

Global warming is causing the world to heat up slowly. Global warming started in 1880 and the last decade has been the warmest on record. Global warming is gradually killing millions of organisms.

Jungles - A CRUEL BATTLE OF ANIMALS VS HUMANS

 What are JUNGLES? 

Jungles are places that are home to a wide variety of life. Jungles are extremely important, they are a home to billions of organisms. 

Why are they being cut down?

Jungles are being cut down because they take up a lot of space and lumber. People can get lumber to sell and more space to build. Lumber jacking at this degree is cruel and hurts our world, because "as I said before." Jungles are places that burst with organisms and in all produce over 20% of Earth's oxygen, so if someone cuts all of the jungles we lose over 20% of Earth's oxygen. Talk about tragic!

SHARK FINNING

 What is shark finning?

Shark finning is a cruel, and useless practice including taking the fins of sharks and using them to make "shark fin soup." Oftentimes shark finners release the rest of the shark and they slowly suffocate. Shark finning is wrong and should be stopped. If you live in a place where shark finning is NOT banned please write to a powerful person who has control over laws. Every bit helps! Sharks are NOT murderous they are helpful, and killing is purely horrific and inhumane. If you want to learn more about how you can do research.
